Guwahati: The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Cell arrested a woman employee of Assam who was allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs. 4000. A senior assistant for the Department of Welfare of Plain Tribes and Backward Classes was caught red-handed taking bribes inside the Assam Dispur Secretariat campus. The official was identified as Seema Devi.
The team also recovered Rs 99,000 in cash from her purse, in addition to the bribe money. Assam Police tweeted by mentioning in continuation to resolve the corruption issue.
On 3 January 2022, Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam Chief Minister in a key meeting with all the SPs of the state emphasized ensuring transparency and warned police officers against being too lenient on criminals. Sarma also stated unequivocally that corruption and alleged public harassment in police stations will not be tolerated. All SPs have been asked by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to ensure that commoners are not harassed in the pretext of issuing accident reports or filing cases, among other things. Sarma stated that all cops must refrain from demanding monetary compensation in order to resolve situations involving ordinary citizens.
